Ubuntu by Microsoft?

technology:

When people switch away from Microsoft Windows on the desktop, the number one choice is Ubuntu Linux. There are many reasons to switch. Unfortunately Ubuntu 10.4 adopts several bad features from Microsoft, making the switch less attractive.

DVD

Ubuntu focus on downloads onto CDs. After you install from CD, you have to install a massive load of software over the network. Ubuntu need a DVD with all the common software in one download so you can install on several computers without repeating the massive download. Linux tends to trail Microsoft in the area of support for new hardware but once the hardware support is available, there is not reason not to use it. Fedora and other Linux distributions offer the choice of small CD and full DVD downloads. The equivalent for Microsoft and other proprietary software is to offer a home edition and a larger more expensive Pro edition with the features arranged so that you almost always need the pro edition. Ubuntu lack the Pro edition.

RAID

One of the really frustrating things about Microsoft Windows is the lack of RAID in the desktop version. The Server version of Windows used to be only slightly dearer and a lot of power users used the Windows Server edition to set up their workstations with RAID. Microsoft software RAID was very good and far better than the clunky pretend RAID supplied with some hardware add-in cards.

The standard Ubuntu desktop edition does not let you create RAID partitions. The Ubuntu server edition will not set up a proper user interface. There is an alternate download with the flexibility to set up RAID but it fails to work for a lot of common configurations. The Ubuntu desktop edition might be built by Microsoft
