LG Intello Washing Machine

LG produce a wide range of goods from DVD drives to washing machines. One of their washing machines makes me have second thoughts about buying their computer products.

In the past I recommended their monitors and CD drives because they were the best of the economy brands and more reliable than most of the cheap imports. Now there are a dozen other brands at the same price with equivalent reliability and in many cases a wider range. LG has dropped from producing a few good products in a small number of product ranges to being just another company that sells everything and stands out in none.

Their washing machine was sold as the Intello with the emphasis on intelligence. I fail to see anything intelligent about the machine. There is one minor feature that might be of use in Korea, LG's home territory, but is of no use in Australia, where I tested the washer. Their Intello washing machine has a wide range of features that are the exact opposite of intelligent in this environment.

The front of the LG Intello washing machine.

I will start with the one advantage of the LG washing machine, model WD-8074FHB, over my previous machine. The LG washer is quieter than it's predecessor. The LG machine is not noticeably quieter than the other brands I looked at before buying the LG. The decrease in noise is common to many new machines.

Save Water

I have promoted water conservation since 1977. Now Australia has realised how little drinkable water we have and everyone is jumping on the water conservation bandwagon. I thought that this time around I would buy a washing machine with the highest water conservation rating.

The LG Intello washing machine had the highest water saving rating available at the time of purchase. About half the brands had at least one model with the same water saving rating. I decided to buy the LG because it was the lowest price reliable brand within the highest rating.

Bah! Humbug! The water conservation rating system let a fraud through. The LG is absolutely useless at saving water. The LG has a normal setting, an economy setting, and options to add extra steps to the wash cycle. The normal setting used less water than the normal setting on my previous washer but the clothes come out unrinsed. The clothes are stiff, scratchy, and cause typical detergent irritation. To get the clothes clean, I have to switch on extra rinse cycles and that makes the LG washer use the same amount of water as my previous machine. I bet the triple A water rating was made without testing the quality of the wash.

Faking Tests

You can make tests show anything you want. There is a multi billion dollar industry built around making test results show anything you want. You say that you want a certain result then the testers build tests to show that result. Effem Foods Pty Ltd, the local manufacturer of the Mars bar, sponsored university research in to cocoa. Guess what the researcher found. Antioxidants in cocoa. Of course you would expect that because cocoa is a plant material and all plants contain some antioxidants, however small. The press release to the major media replaced cocoa with chocolate to suggest that highly refined, heated, and sugared chocolate might be healthy.

You do not have to be brilliant to fake test results. I was able to do it in chemistry classes when only 14 years old. Our science teacher implemented exacting standards to teach us the highest quality chemistry. He rewarded us for accuracy but was suspicious of anyone who could produce 100% accurate results. I coached my fellow students in how to produce natural looking test results with slight random variations. We did exactly what we were told but, due to my detailed calculations and meticulous approach, could produce any result we wanted even if the experiment failed. If a 14 year old kid can fake results, imagine what a billion dollar company can do.

To fake low water usage, replace normal fabrics, especially cotton, with plastics such as polyester and microfibre. The plastics absorb less dirt, less water, and less detergent. You can start your wash with less detergent and use far fewer rinses.

Electronic, Not Intelligent

The LG Intello washing machine has electronic controls. That does not make the machine intelligent. There is nothing in the washing machine that could not be done in the 1950s using relays. The first electronic computer, invented in the early 1940s by the British, had far more intelligence. The electronic washing machine has a counterpart of equal intelligence built by Heron in Greece 2000 years ago using wood and string.

A really intelligent washing machine designed for Australia would use our off peak hot water. When we use off peak hot water, we save energy, which both saves money and saves the environment. That reduced energy use leads to lower air temperatures in our city, less need for air conditioning, and higher rainfall. The flow on effect from using off peak hot water in hot dry Australia is to save water. The LG intello washer does exactly the opposite.

The LG washing machine control panel.

The stupid LG washer loads the machine with cold water then heats the water using expensive peak electricity. The environment then suffers all the flow on effects. I called LG to complain. They said you have to set the washing machine to an extra hot setting, 50 degrees or above, to make the machine use hot water instead of cold. Stupid! There is no warning about the design error on the washing machine or in the instruction manual. Stupid, stupid. The LG washing machine is a stupid choice for Australia.

Extra Expensive

Most of Australia is warm enough to use cold water for washing. When you do need a few extra degrees, you only need a little off peak hot water. You cannot do that with the LG. You are forced to shovel expensive peak electricity through the washing machine. Most machines designed for Australia do not have an electric heating element because the electricity going in to the washing machine is 300% dearer than the electricity used to heat off peak water and around 500% dearer than the natural gas used to heat water in many homes.

I estimate that for our small household, if we were living in the colder parts of Australia where you cannot wash in cold water, it is cheaper to throw the LG washing machine in the rubbish bin than to keep it running on peak price electricity.

Gimmicks

Instead of something useful that is normal on washing machines designed for Australia, LG give us some weird clock to make the washing machine switch on in the middle of the night when it will wake everyone. The clock might be useful overseas where they can use off peak electricity direct in to a washing machine. We do not need the clock here, we just need an intelligent washing machine that uses our low cost, low impact hot water.

Lint Filter

My clothes come out covered in lint because the LG washing machine does not have a lint filter. The lint filter that is mentioned in the operating manual keeps the lint out of the drain pipe. Big deal. There is no lint going down the drain because it is left on the clothes. We want a filter to keep the lint off the clothes.

Get a washing machine with a lint filter for the water in the wash. There is no point buying an economical washer if it does not clean your clothes. You do not save money or time when you have to wash some clothes twice.

Lint filters need a little extra water in the wash to wash out the lint. That extra water also rinses out the detergent. If your washing machine has enough extra water to wash out the lint then you use fewer rinses which in turn saves water. The LG's wash is so bad that I often have to wash clothes twice, which a real waste of water.

M. G. of the United Kingdom asks

I have a LG intello washing machine. Product code is:wm-1090fhb. I am having problems with it when I try and do a wash it only does half a wash it wont spin or drain the water and it comes up with a error code on the main display the code it comes up with is: OE. I have lost the manual and would be very grateful if you can help.

The manual from my washing machine says

Drain hose is kinked or clogged. Clean and straighten the drain hose.
The drain filter is clogged. Clean the drain filter.

Small square access panel

The drain filter is behind the access panel at the bottom left hand corner. You open the access panel by inserting a coin or similar thin device into the small slot at the top centre of the access panel. Press up on the coin to flip the cover out and down.

Access panel open showing the filter on the left

The filter is the large circular device on the left. Turn the handle of the filter counter clockwise about a third of a circle then the filter should pop out with a gush of water. you get about half a litre of water on the floor. A towel will soak it up. If your machine stopped during a wash, the whole wash load of water, detergent, and dirt might leak out over your floor.

drain filter containing lint and coins

Clean the filter out every few months to stop the filter clogging up during a wash. Our machine needs a clean once per year. Your filter might contain coins and other valuable lost property. We made a fabulous 15 cents during one cleanout.

Model wtr801

A. F. of Australia says

I have been struggling with my Lg machine (also stupid!) for 3 years, so was delighted to see I'm not alone! My machine, model wtr801 has fuzzy logic -very fuzzy!! Every time the machine gets off balance when spinning (which happens a lot), the machine stops, and refills with water, in an attempt to rebalance the clothes. It rarely achieves the rebalance, so gets filling and unfilling with water in vain. Its the most stupid design. When I complained to LG, they just said to keep getting it serviced - the service guy said it was just the pump, and they break all the time(??!!) I then went to Dept of Fair Trading, and I am finally getting LG to replace it with another model (wtr852-hopefully you haven't heard anything bad?). I also don't like the electronic controls - they switch off if you pause the machine while you are having a shower- so you have to start the whole cycle again - bring back the old-fashioned controls!!

Temperature

November 17, 2007

John asks

Can someone tell me what all the bloody numbers are around the dial - it has like a degrees 'C" in the top right - but 90degrees C seems like a little bit too hot

The temperature display on the washing machine.

On the right is the temperature display from my LG washing machine. 90 degrees is valid but is not hot enough to kill tuberculosis. 60 degrees kills the same bugs as 90 degrees and makes bleach work as hard. On my machine, 50 degrees is the minimum temperature required to use the hot water from the off peak water supply but 50 degrees too hot for many types of washing and is hot enough to destroy the enzymes used in some laundry powders. 40 degrees is the hottest wash you can have without destroying the enzymes but, in this LG washer, is created by using peak electricity to heat cold water. The cold setting works all year round in temperate Sydney and does not use electricity to heat water.

It might be a design fault only on some models of LG washing machines but there is no 20 degrees setting. 20 degrees is the minimum temperature to make some chemicals and enzymes work at full power. You need 20 degrees when the tap water is nearly freezing. 30 degrees would be acceptable if the machine did not have the other design fault, the inability to produce 30 degrees without heating cold water. If I washed a lot of clothes in the colder parts of Australia, I would save money and the environment by throwing out this washing machine and buying one designed for Australia, a washing machine with a 20 degrees setting that uses mixed hot and cold water.

Other LG Products

I used to buy LG CD drives. In the current LG range of DVD drives, there is only one dual layer writer. The LG has exactly the same specifications as a Samsung drive and the Samsung is cheaper. The Pioneer equivalent gives you more speed for the same price. LG should focus on making a smaller range of products so they can spend more time getting the design right.

Conclusion

Buy any washing machine except LG. Ignore the AAA water rating as it appears to be the result of irrelevant tests. The design is inappropriate for Australia. Check if the design is appropriate for your country. Be wary of all their other LG products in case their other products have the same inappropriate design.

Comments

My mother owns that particular LG model, and has done for many years. Its fantastic in every aspect. I myself have the new model LG &kg and I have absolutley no problem recommending these and many other LG products to anyone.

Hello Anonymous,
The rubber seal on the front of my LG washing machine is falling apart after only a couple of years use.

My previous washing machine sealed perfectly for around 15 years through the many washes created by busy adults, lots of guests and a house full of teenagers. The LG rubber is falling apart after just a few washes for a couple of adults who are rarely home. that makes the old Simpson washer 15 times better based on time and about 50 times better based on the number of washes.

Peter

Bearing broken, 4 times. (2 years and 9 months) This machine is full ****.

When spinning, the tub makes a loud noise, like maybe a bearing is shot. Can you give me some advice on this.

Same here, I got cracking noise. Any idea how to cure it?

A cracking noise, vibration, may well be the spider that connects the bowl to the drive shaft. I have just replaced mine. It was corroded and snapped when thin enough. The slack also allows the bowl to damage / destroy the front seal. Try for any play in the bowl by applying upward pressure, if it moves, the spider has broken.

Hi energy australia have a product called powersmart that tiers the rates depending on time of use. www.energy.com.au/energy/ea.nsf/Content/NSW+TOU+Res+Rates
A separate power supply isn't directly connected to the washing machine but you could choose to wash out of peak times and the costs are much reduced.

WOW... I was so suprised to come to this site and see all the negative comments about this incredible washer.... maybe yours is older than mine (have had for 1 1/2 years) but I am MORE than pleased with the washer and dryer. I have had no problems other than my clogger drain filter which is why I came to the site. When I found it was a clogged filter I thought.... "OH GREAT, I will have to pull out my machine" and to my great pleasure I found the drain easily accesible right in front... I recommend this brand all day long

My machine wouldnt spin....I have lost my LG manual. I rung LG who said Id have to buy a new one & would not advise me on the error code. (OE)

After finding this site & checking the pipe, my machine still wasnt working... I read your article & 'praise the lord!!!' My 12 year daughter used her nimble fingers to unclog the drain filter at the front of the machine (I hadnt noticed it b4) 'blush'

Just to let U know a big thank you from me!!!! My machine is now working!!

Many thanks annemarie X

love to know what model u have,i have the wt-r801 ,nothing but trouble with pumps and timing

My machine has a broken door seal after just a few years light use and I have been waiting a month for a replacement rubber strip for which they charge $88.

My 3 years 1 month WD8013F has stopped spinning. There was some telltale at 2 years and 10 months but I was too busy to believe that any washing machine would break down before five years. I still have the manual and did all the things they recommended. Still not spinning. The warranty is 3 years so LG told me that I will have to pay for the service man to come and check and repair.

This machine has had problem before. At 2 years 1 month, it started to walk (hop) forward during spinning! It was apparently a recognised problem because they came in and fixed it without asking a question. The serviceman said this model has been known to walk unaid from the age of 1 day to 3 years old.

I am so glad to see other people having problems too. Those with no problem yet, Good luck. LG, life is NOT good anymore.

My LG intellowasher WD-8013F has stopped spinning, what did you do to fix this...??

Well, My washer is showing OE even after I cleaned the filter and everything.
As soon as the washer goes to the DRAIN mode, it stops and shows OE message, even though there is NOTHING in the pump or the filter or the hose...
What am I supposed to do now?

OE Error Fix:

Background:
I have an LG WD-1227RD washer/dryer combo. Love it! Anyway, it's about two years old, we always overfill it and always have, and have lots of pets, so we often empty the lint filter. (eg take the 'tap' out of the tube, drain that, then unscrew the lint trap, clean out the dog hairs, and it's back to normal. It's only done the OE (outlet error) once. Till tonight!:

washing a duna, it died mid cycle ( i wasn't home ) and said OE Error. It would not drain. I looked in the lint catcher and instead of hairs, it had soapy water sludge, but wasn't blocked at all. Most odd.

I could hear the pump spinning/pumping, but no water was flowing out.

Not wanting to wait till next week, call a tech etc, I unplugged the machine and removed the rear cover, four screws.

It's a pain to get to in this washer as my arms aren't long enough, but i could see the back of the pump at the front of the machine through the open rear panel. There is a big squishy hose, about 2 inches across, that comes off the bottom of the drum. Then it narrows, down to about one inch, and enters the back of the lint filter/pump assembly. There is a normal squeeze type hose clamp there; you have to squeeze each side to release the clamp tension in order to slide the little 1 inch end of the hose of the back of the pump.

No sooner had i done this, then a big lump of black hair/fur/fluff spat out, and a hell of a lot of water. :)

Put it all back together, making sure the clamp was on properly, and it's working well again.

Obviously doing this would/could void your warranty, at your own risk, blah blah, Just thought i'd let people know that:

1) If OE error occurs, clean & empty the filter.
2) If this doesn't solve the problem, and it won't drain, then provided that you can hear the pump spinning (the normal whirring the machine makes that should be accompanied by the water going down the drain) then the hose pipe leading to the pump is probably blocked.

I'm sure a lot of dodgy service people might just charge you for a new pump & labour, but if you can hear the pump spinning then you just need to remove the blockage.

Good luck!

Rowan

Brilliant! We just did this and found $6.50 worth of change in the drain pipe...hopefully this'll solve the problem!

I was about to freak out after seeing all the comments here...this was my first problem after 3 years of owning this washer. I love it but everyone else online seems to have all kinds of problems.

I was getting clicking sounds for a while and then an OE error code that simply shut down the whole machine. I read this site and just cleaned out the drain on the front lower left hand corner and sure enough... it was full of stuffing from my dogs toys! No wonder it was acting up.

I'm sure I would have run in to a lot more problems listed in here if I forced it to keep going and did not find this site.

Thanks for the info, you saved my X-Mas Eve laundry problem :-)

I have the same washing machine and problem as A . F.Australia it drives me crazy and wastes so much water. Hopefully, I too will be able to get a replacement??

The following may help people with similar machines.
The LG Fuzzy Logic WF-801 Washing Machine.
This may help someone with a problem machine

This machine was going off balance when the Spin Cycle was started during a Wash Cycle.
The result was that the machine would keep trying to re balance itself by adding more water (which is the way it is designed) and then trying to spin to level the load resulting in a continuous wash cycle till stopped.
A visual indication that your machine is sick is if you discover that the clothes are tangled in the bottom of the machine or in balls rather than laying flat on the bottom of the machine after a spin cycle.

The Cure seems to simply be to dismantle the Clutch assembly off the shaft and roughen the Glaze on the shaft and internals of the spring (assuming the spring is still intact and ok) so that they can Grip each other firmly without slippage when assembled and when the spring tries to grip when tensioned in the Spin Cycle.

I used a Cordless drill with miniature emery stone attached and broke the glaze on the shafts and spring. I have done over 15 large wash loads since the repair with no further problem.

The CURE appears to be quite simple once you grasp what is happening underneath the Wash Bowl.

Explanation.
Underneath the Wash Bowl there is a pulley wheel attached to the Main Shaft and associated with that shaft is a clutch arrangement that normally allows the motor to rotate the shaft clockwise then anti clockwise during a normal wash cycle until it goes into the Spin Cycle wherein an enclosed spring is brought into play and has to be able to grab onto the shaft and lock it tight to produce the spin motion but it appears that if the Spring or Shaft become Glazed then they will slip and cause the Wash Load inside the Bowl to go into a Ball rather than flatten out and the bowl will then go off balance.(If you clean the spring thoroughly and look inside the spring you may see heat stress marks where the spring has probably been trying to grip the shaft)See the basic Drawing below.

I have an L.G. WD-8050FH and the clothes come out hard and stiff even with softener or rinsing twice. The door catch/safety lock is broken (I doubt if the repairer actually did anything because it broke again) and so I push the catch in with a screwdriver and slam the door. I also had a Whirlpool that left lint everwhere. The bane of my life is a bad washer.

I WILL NEVER BUY A LG PRODUCT AGAIN 3 YEARS OLD AND THE IT WOULD NOT PUMP WATER OUT (NEW PUMP $180) THEN IT WAS LEAKING WATER (NEW INLET VAVES $140) NOW I HAVE BEEN TOLD IT NEEDS A NEW CONTROL MODULE HAVE BEEN TOLD $300 + SO IM GOING TO BUY A KLEENMAID NO ELECTRONICS.

We bought an LG Intello machine in 2005 and its been o.k.It's under an extended warranty programe but thats not worth the paper it's printed on.Our machine broke down 9 weeks ago and LG still hasn't fixed it!!!I will be taking it to the ACCC and Consumer Affairs.

From experience, front loaders use so little water that the heating doesn't amount to much, as far as I can tell. I would also like to soften (pun not intended)my last comment by saying that liquid detergents give a much better rinse effect, and that some cottons are not as soft as others. My LG did have a bell to notify end of washing, which was good.I never used the rapid program (my fault)and the normal was exceedingly long. The cause of the door not locking was apparently a twisted door, necessitating a whole new expensive door. I haven't tested it though, since I got a Miele into which you can program more rinses and more water. It would still use a lot less water than a frontloader though. I am pretty happy with it.

I have an LG LS-50 laptop that is literally falling apart. The case has cracked in several locations, almost like fault lines emerging from nowhere! I cannot explain the cracks in the case, they are neither from dropping nor stress. I spoke to LG about the silver paint wearing off, but the thing is they do not even care! Everything goes through an absolutely rubbish service centre called highpoint. Highpoint do the repairs on behalf of LG on their laptop range, and really have a don't give a sh_t attitude to repairs. Don't think you will actually deal with LG if you have a problem! So far with this laptop I have had the keyboard break, the screen fail, and the case crack in random locations (hinges, sides, and top of screen) all within a period of 24 months. The same service agent, highpoint, took my PDA for 3 months and did not ever offer a replacement, instead they sent it back broken and a credit note for the wholesale (not retail) price. In fact Highpoint operate as a profit business, so beware of buying anything LG, or Acer as you will not be dealing with the actual company that took your money!! (LG = Daylight robbery).

I also have an LG Laptop and found to be having the same type of problems
I also dealt with Highpoint and told them where to go and refused to pay any type of money as they had not done anything.
They had a don't give a sh*t attitude and wouldn't touch the unit because the serial number on the sticker was unreadable due to being worn through.
I had to show proof of purchase which is fine but still would not do anything until i paid them money, All i wanted was to have the power outlet replaced as it was shorting out when plugged into the wall.
I ended up getting the laptop back and told them in no certain way where they could stick their service.
I wasn't the only person that day who had done that either.
What i am after now is somewhere where i can get a replacement optical drive as this one has seemed to have failed and is causing no end of problems with the unit.
If you have any suggestions please give me a tingle on the email so i can try and get this back up and running.

I have a very similar machine (WD-10WD, just like WD-1074FB or 1076) and I'm disappointed too! Agree with the author 100%. Can't believe that Intelliwashers are so STUPID. The wash quality is surprisingly bad, just like low-end top loaders. Only much slower than TL. The "Coloureds" program at 40C (without pre-wash), for example, takes nearly two hours to finish! Small or large load - doesn't matter. There is no Lint Filter (!!!) and the rubber on the front easily collects dirty water (bad design). I have never seen a machine where this rubber emits BAD SMELL such this one :(. Wash is very quiet, but spin cycle causes HORRIBLE dance on the floor. And I'm still trying to find "the best" detergent for this machine. Not clear from the manual which detergent is recommended? In Taiwan it's IMPOSSIBLE to buy "HE" detergent (market is 95% top-loaders). So we can only use cold water or 30C to avoid OVERSUDSING at higher temperatures. Even a slightly more detergent (necessary for good wash) will cause problems. Missing "half load" and "more water" buttons very much! As you say, sometimes need to wash clothes TWICE to get it right. In past it was easier: more detergent + more water = better results. Don't know about LG products sold in US, Europe? Probably better, and this Intello-#$%*&! only for Asia-Pacific and Eastern Europe. But even Eastern European washers (old design) are better. In future I will try to avoid LG products AT ALL COSTS.

Can someone tell me what all the bloody numbers are around the dial - it has like a degrees 'C" in the top right - but 90degrees C seems like a little bit too hot - I cant work out what the numbers are - 30 40 60 90 and ECO - certainly have nothing to do with time - thought it may be about water level - doesnt seem to do anything there either. And trying to find a manual on the net - forget it.

I have an LG WD-8074FHB front loader washer. When starting it up with a new cycle it comes up 'de' on the display. Can anybody tell me what this means.

This is my second LG washer. LG replaced the first one with a new one, free of charge as they could not stop it hopping all around the laundry after trying to fix it five times. The second one has worked fine up until now, the day after we get home from holidays with several loads to do.

Hi guys,

Our LG Washing Machine 7KG - WD-8013F - has a bearing problem. I pulled it apart and found hat it is the roller bearings at the back of the tub where you take the large pulley off.
It's about 5 years old we think, I don't really care too much, it's out of warranty. But I am at least going to have a crack at fixing it.

I know I need the bearing and maybe the seal parts of:
K121 - 4280FR4049B - Ball Bearing
K122 - 4280FR4049C - Ball Bearing
K125 - 4036ER3001A - Seal

My questions are:

1 - Are these replaceable parts?
2 - Where could I get these parts?
3 - Can I change it easy enough?

Thanks!

Michael

I am having the same problem with my LG WD-8074FHB. Has anyone figured out what dE means?

dE means door Error.
Please check door lock correctly.

2 weeks after the warranty ran out, the main control board burnt out. easy to replace. $160 a pop.
Now 1 year later, same thing.
AVOID! particularly units that are starting to come up on the 2nd hand market. They wont last!

I would NEVER recommend an LG product to anyone, i have had my washing machine 2 years, it has constantly leaked, its noisy and now the door handle has just broke.
I Have Contacted the company and they dont want to know.

Hi, I have a LG Intellowasher WD-8013F and water keeps filling up and staying in the softener dispenser, does anyone have a solution?

It's true that the appliance parts market has become very competitive and yes there are better products that show up in short periods of times, nevertheless your LG evaluation seemed to be a little harsh. I appreciate the advise but I am not fully convinced that this washing machine is that bad or perhaps the worst on the market considering the price.

I am sure all of these comments are justified but I have had my LG washer for over five years and it has lasted without so much as a single problem that could not be rectified with cleaning out the lint filter which is conveniently placed at the front.

As a landlord I have always purchased this brand and model in all it's reincarnations for various properties (approximately 6 to date) and all without incident. I know many people who have purchased 'European' brands expecting robust quality only to be disappointed time and time again and with expensive spares and service to boot.

My LG washer is just over 4 yrs old. It hasn't been too bad until now. The push button controls have started to stop working. Originally the temperature control, then the rapid button & now the start/pause control. So effectively I can't wash. Can anyone tell me if this is easy to fix? Should I contact LG for an approved repair person or just anyone who fixes washing machines?

I have had this machine for 5 years, and had no trouble until the past year and in particular the past 3 months. It gets about 10 minutes into the cycle and flashes up with either the OE or FE error code! And I have to restart to load and this is a waste of time and water!

We have checked the drain, and filter and all is clear, but the damn messages won't go away. Also when I first close the door when starting a load it flashes up DE error code.

Any ideas on how I can fix this please?

I am about to throw this machine I am so frustrated with it!

I get your point but I don't see why you have to quit the other LG products just because you were unsatisfied with the washing machine. First of all, LG has build it's name with hardware products, washing machine is a very new niche for LG. I didn't expect to see perfect washing machine, I can only demand that from Maytag parts, they have the experience with manufacturing appliance parts. I suppose that if Maytag decided to manufacture PC hardware it would be a disaster.

There are a lot of Asian companies that sell everything in their home country but only export the good stuff. LG seems to use Australia as a test market for products they are not yet experts in. They also export stuff to Australia that was never designed to fit our market. Given the very small difference in price between LG and their competitors, why should we put up with second rate?

Some LG CRT monitors worked well but others were so bad they should have been released under a cheaper brand. A brand is worthless if you cannot tell the quality of the product behind the brand.

LG CD and DVD drives used to be significantly cheaper than Pioneer drives but now the price difference is insignificant. Most LG drives are better than the unbranded drives but not quite as good as Pioneer. Pioneer specialise in the area and are part of the team writing the standards for optical media. When the the price difference was great, I used Pioneer drives as the main drive in the most important computer and LG drives everywhere else. If an LG drive would not read something, my customers always had a Pioneer drive to read the disk. Now the price difference is equivalent to less than five minutes work. Why would I use an LG drive when it could cause time loss the customer would not get with a Pioneer drive?

Airconditioning is another area where you can save a $100 dollars up front by buying LG but people working in the field refuse to touch LG because of their bad experiences with LG. One model might be fine but another model frequently fails. When you are spending $2000 on the all up installed price, the $100 extra will get you a choice of brands that almost always last 5 or more years while the $100 saved will get you a lottery where you have a high chance of getting a machine that will need repeated repairs starting as early as the first year.

The LG brand is too uneven to risk buying something based on brand. LG should stop selling their products that are not designed and tested for the country of use.

LG- Lucky Goldstar and that's what anyone in the business thought of the merger. Goldstar actually produced some great gear, particularly great value laboratory test equipment.
That all changed with LG. There home appliances are rubbish. I have a Direct Drive LG Intellowasher and have become very proficient at keeping it going. The classic OE is hilarious if the damn thing didn't weigh so much as 50% of the time it is a blockage in the coin trap and 25% of the time it's coins in the flexi pipe off the drum and 25% of the time its a blocked spray pipe/outlet.
Ok for the adventurous and please unplug first!!!!
1) Get a small hook and unblock the upper (above the door) spray jet (you'll hear the circulating pump motor making a hunting noise- that's your cue)
2) Tip the machine back against the wall (be careful get someone to hold it), undo the two/three pump screws from behind the front pump cover and drop the pump. Check the flexi pipe- the end is smaller than the inlet (smart huh? Electrolux vacs knew in 1931 you make the outlet larger and blockages don't happen!) Untie, pick off lint/hair etc
3) Pop the lid (screws under rear plate at back and slide) locate the pressure switch up near the top on a black pipe. Pull off the pipe and blow (I use an air compressor) a quick squirt down the pipe to unblock the pressure switch feeder (lint blocks it and the machine has no idea what the water level is!) While you are at it, blast all the other feeder pipes and detergent dispenser pipes.
4) Once a year, pull the plaset (italian) pumps apart and clean- otherwise they will only last a year or two.

Some tips

1) various two button combinations (pressed together) will give you the following information when the machine is running:

current real time drum speed in rpm
current actual water temperature
current measured water level

The buttons vary from machine to machine, but mine are:
time delay+opt1,delay+opt2,delay+spin

Another tip is: if you want to interrupt a wash (to unlock the door or have a shower), but don't want a reset, turn off the power at the wall- you have about 20 mins before it forgets where it was.

I won't be ever buying another LG appliance (the Direct Drive was the seller and it is quiet), my 612 litre twin door LG fridge is another story...

Ok for the adventurous and please unplug first!!!!

Hey John,Finally got around to pulling apart my Intellowasher 8013 and followed your advice. Pulled apart the pump and all the hoses (drain, main body - pump etc) and cleaned the feed going to the pressure switch (anyone else who wants to try this, it's very easy to do). No lint or coins (a little junk in the drain pipe, but nothing severe), but failed to fix the problem. After a 30 minute wash, it'll fill and drain on the first 2 cycles but not drain on the final cycle before the spin (both lighs flash). Can't fix the problem (it's not blocked pipes or the air sensor, they all seem pretty clean) so i'm guessing it's an electrical fault as I can't find anything else that is making it not drain properly. I was thinking about calling LG or getting a local technician to come and take a look, but it seems like a waste of time (if you google the issue there's 101 people with exactly the same problem). Time for a new washing machine (which is a shame as this is immaculate), this time something other than LG. Thanks again for your help.

Just a quick comment. I agree and have sent a comment, but you are incorrect when it comes to the use of hot water. Firstly, the machine 'could' try to make 30,40 or 50 degrees using your hot/cold mix, but it would end up just opening two valves and heating the water anyway. That is because the time it takes to actually get hot water into a machine through otherwise cool supply pipes from the HWS is significantly more volume than the machine needs for the wash. Even if your HWS was right next to the machine, it will be less efficient than heating a very small quantity of water in situ in the machine. Say you pull 5 litres out of your HWS, it turns on its 3.6kw+ heater to bring the 240 litres back up to whatever you've set it at- half an hour- 1 hour later later it turns off (remember the hysteresis). The LG heater turns on an 1800watt element for a few minutes only- much more efficient, even at twice the cost of power.
That is why it is better to feed a dishwasher with cold water and let it heat it's own, although the cycle takes a few minutes more, it actually saves you a lot of energy. There's no wasted energy (heat losses) in supply pipes- how long does it take to get hot water to the tap in winter? All that time is otherwise wasted water, wasted energy and the machines have to heat it anyway because they work on volume of water to trigger the water level sensors. So you can conceivably feed 'hot' water to a machine that doesn't get it before it fills and it ends up heating anyway- double the waste!

Our hot water is off peak which makes it cheaper plus has a few other advantages. The Sydney electricity supply and power lines are inadequate, making off peak heating an important part of keeping Sydney operating. There are plenty of other cities with the same problem.

Our washer uses about 15 litres of hot water for a typical wash and the short pipe from the hot water service in the laundry to the washer contains less than a litre. Using off peak hot water saves more than 14 litres of water heating during the day when the power supply is overloaded.

Many Australians use solar hot water and their almost unlimited supply of solar hot water is useless in a machine that ignores the free green hot water.

I think LG is good at selling phones and some computer products, selling washing machines won't make the brand more notorious... On washing machines I very much trust Whirlpool. I wouldn't trust the brand for selling phones though because I know Whirlpool is good on making washers...

I hope this forum is still active...
Ive had my LG WD-8013F Washing Machine since 2004 and it has had hardly a problem. Last night I was running the washer and a drier in the laundry and returned to find the washer off, with 1/2 a tub full of dirty water (it had obviously switched off mid cycle). I pushed the power button, and the lights all came on (good thing), I moved the selector light around to pump and pushed the play/pause GO button. The machine mnade a click, as it does accepting a GO command, but then all the lights went out with a lesser click. tried to power up again but it would come on for a second and then off again. After about 2 mins, with an audible click, it reset itself and was able to stay in the power on state, but not run any cycle.
Im wondering if the humidity of the drier has affected something or if anyone knows what causes the machine to trip out the power and stay triped for a few mins. Ive pull the machine apart and dried components with a hair drier and also grabbed a tech drawing and parts list but I cant see a simple fuse or trip switch... perhaps Im not looking in the right spot?
Help Anyone?

When I came home and found the OE message I thought oh no, whats happened. Then I actually opened the door and water spewed out everywhere! Ugh.

I came here and read everyones suggestions and was able to successfully clean out my filter, retrieved the grand sum of 15c and several quite rusty bobby pins, and now have a functioning machine again. Thanks to everyone who so helpfully posted their advice.

I have had my machine since 2003 btw and this is the first sign of any problem, so I would have to give it a big thumbs up really.

My friends found this site anda it helped her clear the washer when it wouldn't drain. Like most of you she was moaning the LG was rubbish until i pointed out to her if she checked pockets before washing clothes she wouldn't have found £1.44, 2 hair slides and a trouser bungee in the trap which was stopping it working. The very clever error code light display alerted her to this fact and its good design enabled her to rectify her mistake with out too much bother. She soon shut up!!! :0)

We have an LG WD-8074 FHB in Australia. We have had it for almost 10 years and have had no real problem with it (except some occasional "walking" during the spin cycle). It seemed to be in great condition until a couple of days ago, when it stopped during the initial filling of water, at the beginning of the washing cycle. It displayed error code SE. This code is not listed in the manual. We have opened-up our pump filters outside the machine, as well as the 'squishy' hose internally, and have found no obvious blockages. We have tried to use the washer over the last few days, but it continues to stop at the same point each time and displays the SE error code. The only thing that may or may not be a clue, following up to the machine malfunction, was a mildewy-type odour that we noticed from the draining water. This suspicious smell presented itself on a few laundry days but not during the final rinse cycles. Also, our clothes are not that dirty when they go into the machine and they dont have any residual odour after the wash either.
Is the odour from the draining water and the SE malfunction in anyway related? I might add that we only use cold water in our wash cycles, in case that makes a difference. Would love to know what we could attempt to do to fix this "SE" problem ourselves. We found a forum that claimed SE stood for Sensor Error, can anyone confirm what it actually stands for?
